The Comic-Con that came and went!
Arriving for industry day Friday was really relatively hassle free. Peter Shigilkowski and myself didn’t have to wait very long to get our badges and get into the show room. We had already seen the floor plan, which was sent to us via the Comic-con and knew where our table was going to be. We had enough time to set up our table and take some of the show in before the general public was let loose at 4pm. The writer of Heroes in Birmingham’s Rachel Kadushin joined us.

Things became very busy with a regular flow of traffic until 8pm. We sold several books and met several other industry people. Our friends at MOCCA had invited us to attend a private opening offered to exhibitors and professionals for: TODD MCFARLANE: A Retrospective. This was a chance to see the man who created “Spawn” walk casually around the gallery room full of his art and discuss each piece. The retrospective was at times honest, raw, and insightful. It was nice to be in a room with less than 50 people among them Jim lee, Gregg Capulo, Erik Larsen, Jim Scalliup and of course Todd Mcfarlane.

I guess from my perspective the worst part of the show was Saturday. I guess when you have really done well advertising a show and have such creators as Neal Adams, Bendis, Jim Lee, Brad Meltzer, Joe Quesada, Kevin Smith, and Jim Steranko, the fans will show up and want to meet them all knowing full well these professionals most likely wont be available on Sunday. We got to the show early Saturday morning and these fans were outside the convention in droves like herded cattle all arriving really early to get into the show. What was worse was it was really cold that day but thankfully we had our badges from Friday and flashed them to about 15 different security people and got in again relatively easy.

We had our table set up and soon after hundreds of people started coming into the show room. This went on for about an hour. It became so congested through each row of the show all you could see was heads. Forget about a normal five-minute walk to get to the front or rear of the building. Soon after that a person who was one of the last fans to get through the doors floored me and said, “didn’t’ you hear, they shut the doors and told everyone to go home. This was only after an hour of the show being open! I quickly went to other colleague’s tables and confirmed the information.

The best part of Saturday was the Indie after party at the Twins pub. We arrived with the “CAG CAKE” celebrating five years of CAG. Sponsors put their books on the table and soon after many professionals arrived to fill the pub to capacity. We ran out of food in the first 15 minutes. It kind of initially felt like the day at the con was recreated as the night at the Twins became just as packed with people. Thankfully some were just there for the food and soon left making the atmosphere more comfortable. We had great live music from Zorikh L., Chris B., and Phillip C. I had the pleasure of meeting several other creators I had not met at the show, some of which were there just for the after party!

Sunday was much less hectic than Saturday but a little busier than Friday. We approached the show coordinators (Reed Exhibitions) about plans for returning for next year. We sold some more items and left Sunday evening. The show promoters were so busy with crowd control I don’t think they ever even got the chance to enjoy their own show.

Look for a VERY HUGE announcement that will benefit the future of CAG on the yahoo message board on March 25th!!!!!!

Don’t forget to check out the Small Press Association Idol contest

Reminder: Team CAG will be at Modern Myths in Northampton on April 1st, 2006 @noon to compete in the comics creation competition! Show your support or join the team!

January 2006

It’s hard to believe I’ve been to almost 60 CAG meetings in the last five years. Some really exciting and good times and some rough times. But art imitates life.

We are pleased to invite you to join us in celebrating the Comic Artist’s Guild’s 5th Anniversary. Further information on this event will be announced in late January.
In February we will be at the NYC Comic-con at the Javitz center.

Since 2000 we have connected talented writers and artists together in the form of meetings. We have set a positive role in the comic book community. As some of you know we have expanded as a network and have several positions that are needed to be filled in 2006. If you know of anyone who would be interested in filling these positions please email James Rodriguiz or myself. Positions are posted below and on the Yahoo message board.

I have no doubt that 2006 will be a very good year for CAG. This year promises to offer several workshops, new CAG imprint books in addition to CAG #5, Raffles, and much, much, more! But as always much of the future of CAG depends on you, it’s members. Being a part of a group has its pros and cons.

As a rule of thumb CAG renewal for your membership will be In December and June, every six months. If you pay in December you skip June and vice versa. Reminders for dues will be given every six months.

Please pass on the word, become a volunteer, any help is help welcomed. We have already generated some of you willing to step up to the challenge. We are looking forward to having your presence at our 5th anniversary celebration. Thank you for your continued support.

CAG will be at THE HARTFORD COLLECTOR CONVENTION at St. Augustine
School Hartford CT., on June 11th and 12th. If you are in the

For more information click here.

CAG is moving towards a business plan to distribute the annuals. If you
are interested in being involved or wish to contribute please e-mail me
for more information.

There has been a very loose discussion around reformatting the
Anthology to have one story arc. This story would have to be compelling
enough for everyone to want to be involved with it in some way. It is
time to start making a decision as to what we are going to do so we
will be collecting ideas for the CAG ANNUAL #5 as the starting point
for a new kind of Anthology. The deadline for story pitch for the one
story arc will be the end of AUGUST at which point, You (the CAG
member) will vote for the story to be printed in issue #5.

Now I know this has people wondering what about issue #4? Well since we
already started collecting stories for that issue over a month ago the
format of the book will be the same but with a different cover idea. If
anyone has ideas for a new cover for issue #4 please contact us. The
deadline for submission for CAG annual #4 is September 15th, 2005.

Last thing on the agenda is the first annual CAG JAM poster. Steve
Berry has made a tentative list of members who will contribute to the
poster. Please e-mail him directly if you wish to be included. The
poster will be auctioned off and the proceeds of its sale will be
donated to a charitable cause. There will be more info on this next
month.

Have a happy June!

May 2005

BIG Thank you for everyones patience with the updates! We continue to work on making things run smoother here but occassionally we find ourselves getting caught up in our "Day jobs" which we can't quit at the moment.

This month I would like to take some time to focus on some other comic book resources for the sole purpose of expanding our network. There are three that I will menion today.

The first group: SPA or SMALL PRESS ASSOCIATION is a great place to start. The group is, a loosely-knit group of writers, artists, publishers and their fans from around the world who have been brought together by their involvement with the wonderful world of small press. Their main goal and purpose is to be a learning/teaching group, bringing in more and more people to the wonderful world of the small press.

The second group is INTER-FAN: The mission of INTER-FAN PRODUCTIONS INK. is To provide an outlet for independent writers and artists to have their work published in independent publications which hopefully (but not always) leads to other contacts. THEY also provide in-house critiques by co-editors or a review board.

The last resource I think your should know about is COMICFOUNDRY.COM. Comic Foundry is for you, the aspiring comic artist and writer. As a member (you can join for free) you can upload your portfolio for other members to view and evaluate. You can also check out other members' profiles and give them feedback. You can check to see how many visitors you've had and what your rating is.

Why am I basically telling you to join other comic book resources? I dont believe CAG has ever been promoting that we are the only gig in town. In reality we find lots of members through other sources like the ones listed above. There has been a real effort by some for us to join together as an independent comic book community. It is important to shop around and have options and as many outlets as possible to get our projects seen! I am also a firm believer that one good turn deserves another.

Please remember to email me if you have any big news you wish to share with other CAG members!!

FURRLOUGH is one of Radio Comix longest running titles. Rusty plans to start with two or three stand alone stories, then moving on to longer story arcs, depending on the response ACE and Queenie recieves through FURRLOUGH'S readers.
